How to find or check an HSN code
Every item on a GST invoice needs an HSN code (SAC for services) with enough digits. Search by everyday words, check a code you have, and see which GST rate applies.
Step by step
- Set your turnover. Up to ₹5 crore or Above ₹5 crore (last year). Tick Bill to an unregistered buyer for B2C bills.
- Check a code. Type an HSN or SAC: you see its official description and whether it has enough digits.
- Or find one by words. Type words like "biscuit", "cotton" or "repair"; tap the code that fits.
- See the GST rate. Every rate entry of the notifications for that code, with the notification and S. No. When entries differ, pick the one matching your goods.
- Fix your items. The list at the bottom checks every saved item; type the right code or GST % and press Save.
Worked example
"Wall putty": search shows 3214 (glaziers' putty, grafting putty… painters' fillings), GST 18%. A dealer with ₹3 crore turnover may print 3214 (4 digits) on B2B bills; above ₹5 crore it must be 6 digits, for example 321490.
Rules and dates
Notification 78/2020-CT (from 1 April 2021): 4 digits up to ₹5 crore turnover (B2B; optional on B2C), 6 digits above. E-invoices need at least 6. GST rates follow the September 2025 rate changes; the tool shows the notification for each entry.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Picking a code by the first word only. Read the full description and the chapter notes; ask your accountant for borderline goods.
