How to find the right HSN code
The HSN code decides the GST rate, so a wrong code means a wrong bill. Finding it takes a few minutes if you go step by step.
Steps
- Describe the goods plainly: what it is made of and what it is used for. "Steel almirah for an office" is better than a brand name.
- Find the chapter. Most goods are classified by material (cotton, plastics, iron and steel) or by use (machinery, furniture, toys). Our finder lists every chapter: type a word and pick the closest.
- Find the heading and full code. Open the GST portal search: services.gst.gov.in › Services › User Services › Search HSN Code. It needs no login. Type the chapter or words, then read the 4, 6 and 8-digit lines until one describes your goods exactly.
- Check the rate. The same search shows the GST rate for the code. For a close call, read the entry in the CBIC rate notification.
- Save it with the item. Put the code and rate in your item list once, so every bill uses the same code. Our checker flags items with too few digits.
Shortcuts that help
- Your supplier's bill: if you resell goods unchanged, the supplier's HSN is usually the right one. Still check it.
- Your customs or import documents carry an 8-digit code for imported goods.
- Your accountant may already have a code list for your trade.
Mistakes to avoid
- Picking by the lowest rate. The description decides the code, not the rate you would like.
- Using one code for everything. Different goods on one bill usually need different codes.
- Old codes and rates. Rates changed on 22 September 2025 and again on 1 February 2026; recheck codes you set up before then.
For goods that are hard to classify, a business can ask for an advance ruling from the GST Authority for Advance Ruling of its state. Ask your accountant first.
